Hacienda de Santa Ana Atoyasolc was in the Mexican province of Tlaxcala, created as strictly an Indian province to reward the Tlaxcalans for their help in defeating the Aztecs. Santa Ana Atoyasolc was one of the Spanish-owned landed estates in the province. Land was bought in small parcels from the Indians to create a large hacienda.
The owner of this large estate, and the man who had these documents compiled and bound, was Don Francisco Mateo de Luna. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1666, he held the title, "Contador del Tribunal Mayor de Cuentas" of Mexico until his retirement. He was the first in his family to achieve status as a member of a noble order, Calatrava. Don Francisco did not reside in Mexico City, but in Puebla de los Angeles, the second largest city in Mexico and its commercial center. It was in Pueblas that Don Francisco hired a skilled notary and artist to actually put these manuscripts together: Jose Manuel Estomba de la Torre, of Pueblas.
Principally in Spanish with some in Nahuatl.
